Cancun is okay, but Playa del Carmen is much nicer. Just a smaller place,

but the beaches are great. Kudos to swordsman1 for suggesting that. It all depends on what you're looking for. Cancun is great for night clubs and stuff like that. If you just want to stretch out on the beach, do Playa del Carmen.
